  • If you want to order an item through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) yourself, use SRCS. SRCS searches many other Indiana Libraries. This option is sometimes faster.
  • If you want Library staff to purchase an item for the library, use the Request Form.
  • If you want the Interlibrary Loan Department to find an item from libraries all over the USA, use the Request Form
  • If you wish to make an ILL request on your own, first search SRCS. If SRCS does not have the item you want, then fill out the Request Form and select “Yes, please forward my request to ILL.”

General Guidelines for All Requests

  • A valid adult library card in good standing is required for requests. Those with PLAC cards and Yorktown Reciprocal Borrower cards should contact their home libraries for requests.
  • A valid email address is required for library staff to contact you with questions.
  • Requests may take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive.
  • If the library owns a title in one format, we may not purchase it in a second format.
  • If the library does not purchase the requested item, you may be able to obtain the item via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Statewide Remote Circulation System (SRCS) is a patron-led ILL system that searches Indiana Libraries. Alternatively, you can have ILL staff search items from libraries all over the USA via the Purchase Request/Interlibrary Loan form.
  • If you wish to make an ILL request on your own, first search SRCS.This option is sometimes faster.
  • Arrived ILL items will be held for 7 days on the hold shelf, however, immediate pickup is recommended due to variable due dates from outside lending libraries.
  • ILL items must be checked in and out via library staff. ILL items may not be checked out at self-checks or returned in book drops.
  • To renew any ILL item, call 765-747-8214 at least 7 days before the due date. Due dates and renewals are determined by the lending library.
  • The customer is responsible for keeping their card in good standing. There is a $1.00 charge for removed ILL stickers. A $2.00 per item charge will be assessed for ILL materials not picked up. If you find an ILL request is no longer needed, please notify the Interlibrary Loan Desk at 765-747-8214 immediately and your request may be cancelled at no charge. You must call before the material arrives at Muncie Public Library. A fee of 25 cents per day per item is charged for materials returned after the due date. This date is found on the Interlibrary Loan sticker on the front cover of the material.

SRCS FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q. What is the difference between SRCS and ILL?

 A. When a book or other item you need is not owned by the library, you may request that it be borrowed from another library. This cooperative service is Interlibrary Loan, often abbreviated ILL. SRCS is a semi-automated type of ILL available in Indiana. You, the borrower, will log into the SRCS website and place the request rather than library staff. SRCS searches only Indiana libraries. Due to the proximity of lending libraries, SRCS requests may potentially arrive sooner than other ILL requests. Patrons have the ability to check the progress of their request on their SRCS account.

Q. Who may use SRCS?

A. SRCS is available to all adult MPL cardholders in good standing with the exception of PLAC cardholders and Yorktown Reciprocal Borrowers. PLAC and Yorktown borrowers will be asked to contact their respective home libraries for Interlibrary Loan requests.

Q. How do I use SRCS?

A. Log into SRCS with your library card number and PIN, then search for and request the item you want. Once ILL staff approve your request, it will be automatically sent to all libraries in the SRCS system, continuing until a library responds.

Q. What is my PIN?

A. For most people, your library PIN will be the last 4 digits of the phone number you gave the library when you got your card. If you do not know your PIN, contact the Circulation Desk.

Q. How many SRCS requests can I have at a time?

A. There is a maximum limit of 20 SRCS requests per cardholder.

Q. How long will I have to wait?

A. SRCS requests may take 4-6 weeks to arrive, however, some items may potentially arrive sooner due to the close proximity of lending libraries.

Q. What happens when my request arrives?

A. You will receive an automated message when your item arrives. Contact the Circulation Desk to update your contact information and notification preferences. Arrived ILL items will be held for 7 days on the hold shelf, however, immediate pickup is recommended due to unpredictable due dates from lending libraries. Due dates and renewals are set by the lending library.

Q. How can I renew a SRCS item?

A. To request a renewal for a SRCS item, call 765-747-8214 at least 7 days before the due date. Due dates and renewals are determined by the lending library.

Q. Do I have to do anything different to borrow or return a SRCS item?

A. Yes. All ILL items, including those requested via SRCS, must checked out and returned via library staff. Because these items are not Muncie Public Library property, we must be extra careful handling them. They may not be checked out at self-checks or returned in book drops.

Q. What happens if my SRCS request isn’t filled?

A. The ILL department will resubmit your SRCS request through the Request Form, which uses a larger pool of libraries. You will know this has happened when your request disappears from your SRCS account and a hold for "ILL" plus the title appears on your list of Holds on your My Account screen in the Catalog.

Q. Are there any fees?

A. The customer is responsible for keeping their library card in good standing.

A $2.00 per item charge will be assessed for materials not picked up. If you find a request is no longer needed, please notify the Interlibrary Loan Desk at 765-747-8214 immediately and your request may be cancelled at no charge. You must call before the material arrives at Muncie Public Library.

There is a fee of 25 cents per day per item for materials returned after the due date. This date is found on the Interlibrary Loan sticker on the front cover of the material. There is a $1.00 fee for removed Interlibrary Loan stickers.

About Interlibrary Loan (Regular)

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a cooperative program that allows you to borrow materials from other libraries. It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks for requested items to arrive. We are not able to ILL items less than six months old.

ILL is available to all adult MPL cardholders in good standing with the exception of PLAC cardholders and Yorktown Reciprocal Borrowers. PLAC and Yorktown borrowers will be asked to contact their respective home libraries for Interlibrary Loan requests.

To place your own ILL request, use the Statewide Remote Circulation System (SRCS). If the item you want is not available in SRCS, fill out the Request Form.

Interlibrary Loan FAQs

Q. Who may use Interlibrary Loan?

A. Interlibrary Loan is available to all adult MPL cardholders in good standing with the exception of PLAC cardholders and Yorktown Reciprocal Borrowers. PLAC and Yorktown borrowers will be asked to contact their respective home libraries for Interlibrary Loan requests.

Q. How many ILLs can I have at a time?

A. There is a maximum limit of four active requests per cardholder. This includes ILL and Purchase Requests, however, ILLs requested via the self-serve ILL system, SRCS, do not count against this limit. SRCS has a higher limit of 20 requests.

Q. How long will I have to wait?

A. Interlibrary loan requests usually take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive.

Q. How can I renew an ILL item?

A. To renew an interlibrary loan item, call 765-747-8214 at least 7 days before the due date. Due dates and renewals are determined by the lending library.

Q. What happens if my request isn’t filled?

A. The Interlibrary Loan department may resubmit your request a second time if the reason it was rejected was due to being checked out. If the item definitely cannot be filled, you will be contacted by the Interlibrary Loan department by email and in very rare cases, by phone, for patrons without email.

Q. Are there any fees?

A. The customer is responsible for keeping their library card in good standing.

The ILL department always makes requests from free libraries, but occasionally, an item is very rare and only at a "for pay" library such as a museum or university. In those cases, you will be contacted by ILL staff before the request proceeds.

About Purchase Requests

What is a Purchase Request?

Using the Request Form, patrons may suggest specific titles to be added to the library collection. Titles must fit the Collection Development Policy and budget. Due to the large number of suggestions we receive, we cannot purchase all items requested. In general, we consider the year of publication, community interest in this subject, and availability from our library vendors. If the library owns a title in one format, we may not purchase it in a second format.

Purchase Request FAQs

Q. When should I use the request form?

A. After you have searched the catalog to confirm the item is not already in the library collection, use the Request Form when you want MPL Staff to purchase an item for the library. The Request Form can also be used when you want the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) department to find an item from libraries all over the USA. Read the rest of the FAQs for more information about Purchase Requests and Interlibrary Loan service.

Q. Who may submit a request?

A. All MPL cardholders in good standing with the exception of PLAC cardholders and Yorktown Reciprocal Borrowers may submit requests. PLAC and Yorktown borrowers will be asked to contact their respective home libraries for requests.

Q. How many requests can I have at a time?

A. There is a maximum limit of four active requests per cardholder. This includes Purchase Requests and ILLs, however, ILLs requested via the self-serve ILL system, SRCS, do not count against this limit. SRCS has a higher limit of 20 requests.

Q. Can I decide whether the library purchases or borrows my request for me?

A. The request form asks whether we may forward your request to Interlibrary Loan in the event it is not purchased. If the item is not purchased and you opted-in, your request would then be forwarded to the ILL department for fulfillment. If the item is not purchased and you opted-out, then no further action is taken.

Q. How long will I have to wait?

A. If an item is ordered, it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to arrive. Due to the large number of suggestions we receive, it is not possible to respond individually to every request. If we do order your request, we will place a hold for you. Your holds are listed under Holds in My Account in the Catalog.

Q. What happens if the library does not order the item I requested?

A. Due to the large number of requests we receive, it is not possible to buy every item or respond individually to each request. If we do not order your request, and you clicked, “Yes, please forward my request to ILL” on the Request Form, selectors will forward your request to the Interlibrary Loan department, and then Interlibrary Loan staff will attempt to borrow the item from another library in the USA. If you clicked, “No, do not forward my request to ILL” on the Request Form, no further action is taken.

Q. Are there any fees?

A. There are no additional fees related directly to the request form, however, if you opt-in to Interlibrary Loan, there may be fees. Read the ILL FAQs for details.
